Some other name for the Brown rockfish include brown bass, cinnamon bass, ground owl, rock cod, bolina, and the brown bomber.
This is a heavy-bodied species displaying many different shades of brown with blackish mottling as coloration. There is a dark spot to the rear of the gill cover and reddish to oarange stripes stretching away from the eyes.
Adult Browns prefer to be solitary but may be found in small groups at times. Sub-adults can be found in very shallow waters over high and low relief structure as well as among vegetation. San Francisco Bay has produced good numbers of this species since the 19th century. Brown rockfish live to at least 34 years and can grow to 22 inches. They range from the northern Gulf of Alaska to southern Baja California
