The Pacific Halibut is a major commercial and recreational species highly prized for its firm white flesh and mild flavor.
It has a large, flat body with the top side colored brown to grey with darker colored mottling, and the bottom side being bright white. Both eyes are on the top side allowing the Halibut, which allow it to lay flat on the ocean floor and wait in an ambush hunting position.
These fish are, perhaps, most well known for their potential to reach enormous sizes – obtaining lengths of up to 8 feet and weighing in at over 500 pounds. Ranging from Alaska to northern CaliforniaPacific Halibut of the southern end of the range don’t get quite so huge, topping out at around 100 pounds, with 15-25 pound catches being average in the sport fishery.
