Yellowtail rockfish are a slender and elongagate species, closely resembling the Olive rockfish, except for the reddish speckles on the scales.
They will, at times, rest on the bottom structure, but are usually found schooling over large, high relief structure, sometimes in groups of thousands of individuals, often mingling with black, blue, widow and canary rockfishes.
These fish range from the Aleutian Islands to La Jolla, California, and reach a maximum length of 26 inches. Yellowtail rockfish are a major commercial species caught by trawlers from central California up to British Columbia. Fishermen of nineteenth century San Francisco called them green rockfish while the name yellowtail was used by fishers from Monterey.
