The Vermillion rockfish is a stout bodied, beautifully colored species.
Color ranges from pink to dark red with white, black or purple mottling, especially near the lateral line. Deep water fish are usually the darkest in color.
Vermillions are found from Prince William Sound in Alaska to San Benito of central Baja California, can reach a length of 30 inches, and weigh up to 15 pounds. Vermillions are not picky eaters and utilize a wide array of both benthic and water column prey items. Adults are solitary but may be found among schools of Black, Blue, Canary, Copper, and Yellowtail rockfish. A large female Vermillion rockfish may produce up to 2,600,000 eggs per season!
